SIXTEEN

Sebastian

After my proposition in the shower this morning, I’ve barely seen Alex. We went down to breakfast with the Bennetts, where Alex outrageously flirted with the movie star–fucking Jensen. I barely kept my shit together.

Miriam and the girls went into town to do a bit of window shopping. When Miriam brought it up, Alex practically jumped out of her seat. She’s been gone all day, which is why when George suggested we go to his favorite local bar, I couldn’t say no.

I didn’t think we’d go out and get absolutely shit-faced, but George and his sons know how to drink. It was harder to keep my motives under wraps as the alcohol flowed. I never would have drank that much, but I felt like I had something to prove. Especially with fucking Jensen. To top it all off, I didn’t learn anything useful that will help with my plan. The whole lot of them seem to be obsessed with family and legacies.

We stumbled in at around four in the morning, so I shouldn’t really be surprised when I wake up to a cold, empty bed. With my arm stretched, I search Alex’s side of the bed for her anyway. When I come up short, I turn my head on the pillow, peeking open one eye.

Fuck.

My head is killing me.

The bathroom door clicks open, and when Alex comes into view, I sit up in bed faster than I should. My hand goes to my head as I take her in, starting at her feet encased in a pair of sneakers and traveling up to her hair that’s pulled back in a high ponytail.

“Going somewhere?” I ask, rubbing at my forehead.

“Just downstairs.” She sits on the end of the bed and fiddles with the white sheet. It’s a stark contrast to her bronzed skin tone.

As I look down at the ring sparkling on her finger, I wonder for a moment what she would look like in a white wedding dress.

I quickly shut that thought process down and send up a silent prayer of thanks as Alex speaks again.

She’s not looking at me, instead smoothing out and then folding a corner of the material in her hand. “Where did you go last night?”

“We just went to a bar,” I reply, not sure where she’s going with this.

“Did you… you know, hook up with anyone?” There’s a hint of insecurity in her tone, which I’m surprised to hear.

I can’t help the sharp intake of breath that comes at her words. “Jesus Christ, Alex. I went out with the guy I’m trying to convince I’m engaged to you.”

I look away from her, strangely hurt that she’d think so little of me. It’s then that I see the glass of water on my bedside table and two painkillers. Snatching them up, I pop the pills and gulp the water down.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know why I thought you would.” More nervous twiddling ensues and I cover her hand with mine, causing her to lift her focus to me.
